Photo Of The Year: Week One Result

By Fergus Murray | 05 Nov, 2010

With the results in for our first instalment for Photo of the Year, there was little dispute for the top spot, as one photograph took over a third of the total votes.

At the season opener of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championships Series, in a return to the city where the Olympic dream started for triathlon, the image of an Olympic Champion was the clear standout – Jan Frodeno of Germany, suspended mid-stride underneath the overwhelmingly beautiful Sydney Opera House. Although not a memorable race for Jan, who suffered a crash and finished 32nd, it is indeed one of the most spectacular frames of the year.

So with the reader’s choice clearly evident, all that remains is to hear from the man behind the lens. Over the past 20 years, Delly Carr’s stunning imagery has etched his name in the books as one of the best in the business. With numerous national and international accolades, Delly’s work continues to develop and reach levels that many dream of and few ever attain. ITU are indeed fortunate to be able to call upon this true artistic genius to capture moments like this in our sport.

“We are blessed that in Triathlon we set our stage amongst the most picturesque settings around the world. So Sydney and its Opera House and Harbour are up there as the best (being a Sydney boy I can be biased and boast that). We also have the tranquil blue of a bright clear sky and the confident blue of the sporting stage. Now adding athleticism and form to the structured and natural beauty, and we have these components fitting together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

The next piece we add is the gazelle-like gait of an Olympic Champion in full stride. We don’t see his face, but we know who he is. The picture has taken shape. The lines of the architecture and the lines of the athlete begin their linear trajectory to convergence further on down the image. Your eyes naturally follow those lines (and therefore Frodeno and his journey) in your own photographic voyage.” - Delly Carr
