Asunción, the capital city of Paraguay, welcomed a long waited ITU/OS community level coaching course held at the Paraguayan Olympic Committee. Situated at a rural area outside the city, it is an ideal location for future Paraguayan triathlon coaches to enjoy and get the most out of the fantastic learning environment of the course. The coaching course was part of the Paraguayan Triathlon Federation project with their National Olympic Committee to boost triathlon through the development of the human resources who work with triathlon: coaches and technical officials.
The attending coaches had a very high level of immersion and commitment throughout the four days of the course, and in every session, they were very excited for the unique chance to learn triathlon better and increase their specific knowledge on the sport, and associated topics. The highly stimulated group of 22 coaches had a busy schedule involving hearty discussions and active participation in all proposed activities from the practical and theory sessions.
Edgar Ulysses Garay, President of the Paraguayan National Federation, highlighted his enthusiasm with the project as the courses represent a true ground breaking development project for Paraguayan triathlon. According to Mr. Garay, “the combined efforts of the National Federation with the Paraguayan Olympic Committee and ITU provided a unique opportunity for local coaches to get a deeper understanding of triathlon, which in turn will be applied into local development of athletes of all sorts.”
Rodrigo Milazzo (BRA), the assigned facilitator for the course, emphasized the importance of the course and project in order to promote proper knowledge of triathlon and to provide an adequate learning atmosphere enabling local coaches to interact through discussions. Through such experience, these coaches are able to work on applied coaching, which will deliver a bearing for an overall athlete development process in Paraguay, bringing about positive results and outcomes.
The ITU/OS Community Level Coaches Course is part of the ITU Development program, in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee, and focused on the development of triathlon in emerging countries.
After the coaching course, Yolanda Ibarra from Mexico delivered a community level technical officials and event organizers course in conjunction with the national championships where the participants could implement their theoretical knowledge in practice.
