Auckland, New Zealand 13-15 November

A group of 15 facilitator candidates from New Zealand and Australia converged on the Millennium Institute for Sport and Health on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand for the ITU Facilitator certification course being presented specifically for the Oceania participants.

This is the fifth facilitator course held in 2010 and the first to take place in beautiful New Zealand. The ITU Facilitators course aims to educate and prepare coaches, paratriathlon classifiers and technical officials to be able to facilitate ITU courses in their federations and regions. This intensive three day program is a “Train the Trainer” course that is an applied programme in which the ‘learners’ go through all the phases and components of facilitation. ITU introduced this programme to ensure quality presentation on all levels by those experts chosen to offer ITU education courses in all five regions within ITU.

Norman Brook, Alan Ley and Thanos Nikopoulos traveled to Auckland to offer this ‘hands on’ course to the selected group of Oceania coaches, paratriathlon classifiers and technical officials.  The candidates learn about classroom and practical or applied session time management, communication skills, group facilitation, use of questioning and group management skills. The focus is always on the ‘HOW TO’ present the ‘WHAT,’ effectively and in practical situations.

The ITU course gained high praise from all those that participated.

“We were really challenged to lift our presentation skills and have now developed many different techniques and skills “stretching” all those in attendance” said Oceania Sport Development coordinator Terry Sheldrake.

“The ITU Facilitators course was an outstanding opportunity for Triathlon Australia’s coaches to further their professional and personal development. Coaches that attended the course found it to be a very worthwhile and valuable exercise that engaged, challenged and ultimately improved their skills in course presentations and facilitation. All coaches that attended the ITU Facilitators course are now looking forward to putting their new skills into practice by assisting the ITU and OTU with Oceania sport development opportunities.”  Craig Redman National Talent and Development Manager – Triathlon Australia.

“Wow - What a professional event!  Thanks for the ITU for providing this stimulating and demanding professional development opportunity. All of us grew under the excellent leadership of Norman, Alan and Thanos and I for one look forward to enhancing my effectiveness as a contributor within the ITU Sport Development team.” Jamie Turner, Elite Coach Triathlon Australia.
