By World Triathlon Admin | 08 Nov, 2008

After making stops in Croatia, Singapore and South Africa, the ITU Sport Development team continued to log serious miles in the past few months as they headed to Brazil.  This week Libby Burrell and Alan Ley have been in Vila Velha for the BG-ITU Competitive Coaching Course for the Pan American region.  Sergio Santos of Portugal acted as head presenter, leading a group of 27 coaches from nine countries.  Santos was in Croatia with Ley for a Level 1 Accredited Competitive Coaching Course last month and is no stranger to leading high performance success.  He has been part of the coaching team of one of the most accomplished triathletes in ITU history; Olympic silver medallist and 20-time world cup winner Vanessa Fernandes.

A well known coaching expert, Sergio brought a level of excellence to the course with his incredible ability to impart knowledge, said Burrell, Director of ITU Sport Development.

On the first day, coaches spent the morning on swim training led by Alberto Klar.  After a safety and risk management session by Ley, the group was taken through the fundamentals of anti-doping.  On day 2, Santos led the coaches through various bike and run training sessions with a special section on transitions, considered the fourth discipline of triathlon.  The next morning Santos again took the reins, this time in specific sessions on training high level athletes, which also delved into the basics of human anatomy and physiology.  A class on nutrition rounded out the practical training.  The week closed with group presentations.

Burrell was encouraged with the group of coaches participating in the course and sees exciting prospects for the future.

The course was located at a military base on the ocean in Velha, home of the training centre for the Brazilian Triathlon Federation.  Marco La Porta and Carlos Froes, both from Brazil assisted in the successful coordination of the course, along with the local federation.
