With two top results to her name already, we caught up with Kathy after the race in Tongyeong to find out about her training changes and expectations for the new year.

Q. Now that your early season races in Ishigaki and Tongyeong are over, what do you take away from the two back to back weekends of racing?

What I take away is a feeling of confidence that my training is on the right track, so to speak. I just need to continue working hard and stay focused on my goals. It is also of the utmost importance that I remain healthy and injury-free so I can keep on training and enjoy myself at the same time.

Q. Did you have any idea that you were in such good shape coming off winter training, and was it hard training in Montreal with the cold and difficult conditions?

I had a pretty good idea that I was in good shape because this winter I put in a lot of time and effort training on the bike, so it had to pay off.  I may be a bit crazy but I love training indoors. The cold weather season seems to be cut in half and it also gives me the chance to watch my favourite movies while training on the computertrainer machine. I have made a lot of changes in my training since the Olympics.  For a long time, I wanted my boyfriend, David-James, to be my trainer and when he finally made the move, I noticed, after a while, a great improvement in my performance. I had never run that fast before.
Q. In Tongyeong we saw three Canadian women finish in the top ten. Do you see this as the start of a new era for the women’s team?

It is extremely encouraging and inspiring to see Canadian female triathletes in the top ten. It proves to the world that we are indeed a competitive country. Canada is vast and Canadian women train in different cities with different coaches but they nevertheless manage to find new ways to increase their performance.

Q. How do you think the new look world championship series is changing the look of elite racing, and which races are you looking forward to competing in?

I will definitely put more focus on the new world championship series this season. I think this is fantastic because the world’s best athletes will now consistently race head-to-head. I very much look forward to competing in the Washington, Kitzbühel, Hamburg and Gold Coast races.

Q. Travelling from Canada to the rest of the world to compete must be quite exhausting. How do you cope with jetlag, adapting to new cultures and food, and hauling your bags through airports?

I live in the east end of the city of Montreal which is located in the only French-speaking province in Canada. This makes Montreal a very popular destination. Having to haul my bags through airports has become routine for me. The only irritating part is my big bike case - I definitely need to purchase a lighter one. In terms of jetlag, I adapt very quickly and I never suffer from it when I compete. When I travel around the world I always look for a home stay because it is the best way to learn about a culture and sample its foods. I found a home stay in Tongyeong and I loved it.
