In the Yokohama round of the photo of the year competition, Joao Silva sitting on the ground beside the finish tape was the clear winner with more than 36 per cent of the votes cast.  Not only did the image illustrate Silva’s debut win in the World Championship Series, it showed the intense heat that he overcame to claim victory.

With just over 18 per cent of the votes, two photos tied for second place; Emma Moffatt cooling off before the race and a spectacular overheat shot from the women’s race casting shadows on the road.  The photo received recognition outside of the triathlon world and was deemed one of the 50 coolest sport pictures of 2011 by the bleacher report.

So with the fans choice decided, we hear from the man behind the lens: Delly Carr. Over the past 20 years, his stunning imagery has made him one of the best in the business. Here’s his choice from Yokohama and why:
